The 45th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC)
was held from 4 to 7 March 2014 at UN Headquarters in New York, USA. Delegation
headed by Head of the Federal State Statistics Service A. Surinov was attending
the event. The Commission discussed the following items:
implementation of the fundamental principles of official statistics; working
methods of the statistical commission; programme review: broader measures of
progress; national accounts; environmental-economic accounting; international
trade and economic globalization statistics; information and communications
technology (ICT) for development; international comparison programme; disability
statistics; big data and modernization of statistical systems; publications of
the UN Statistics Division; coordination of statistical activities in the UN
system; World statistics day; and regional statistical
development.
On 29 January 2014, the General Assembly endorsed the resolution
A/RES/68/261 entitled Fundamental Principles of Official Statistics as they had
been originally adopted by the Statistical Commission 20 years ago in April
1994. The Principles were reaffirmed by the Statistical Commission with a new
preamble in March 2013 and subsequently endorsed by the Economic and Social
Council on 24 July 2013 (Resolution 2013/21). Endorsement by the United Nations
General Assembly marks the first time the Fundamental Principles have received
such high recognition at the global political level.
